Professor Chidi Ebenezer Halliday is an eminent Nigerian legal scholar, distinguished academic, seasoned legal practitioner, and accomplished administrator with over three decades of professional experience in legal practice, legal education, academic leadership, and public service. He is a Professor of Corporate and Commercial Law in the Faculty of Law, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria, where he has made significant contributions to legal scholarship, research, teaching, and institutional development.
Professor Halliday obtained a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Political Science from the University of Benin before earning the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree (Second Class Honours, Upper Division) from the University of Ibadan. He was called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1992. He subsequently obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M) with Merit from University College London (UCL), University of London, as a prestigious British Chevening Scholar, and later earned the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Company Law from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Theology with Distinction from the Redeemed Christian Bible College.
Professor Halliday's academic career at Rivers State University has been marked by exceptional leadership and scholarly excellence. He previously served as Acting Head and later Head of the Department of Commercial and Industrial Law and is currently a Member of the Senate of Rivers State University. He has also served on numerous university and faculty committees relating to accreditation, research, examinations, quality assurance, and academic administration.
Beyond academia, Professor Halliday has maintained an illustrious legal career spanning private legal practice, consultancy, and public service. Before joining academia, he practised law with leading Nigerian law firms, rising to become Managing Solicitor of George Etomi & Partners, Port Harcourt. He currently serves as a Commissioner of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), where he contributes to the strengthening of democratic governance and electoral administration.
Professor Halliday is an internationally respected scholar whose research focuses principally on corporate law, commercial law, insolvency law, banking law, company law, taxation, competition law, consumer protection, maritime law, environmental law, financial regulation, and business associations. He has authored and co-authored an extensive body of scholarly work comprising numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers published in reputable national and international journals and edited volumes. His scholarship has made significant contributions to the development of corporate and commercial law jurisprudence in Nigeria and comparative legal scholarship.
His editorial credentials are equally distinguished. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Bar Association, Port Harcourt Branch Journal (2024–2026) and currently serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief (Corporate, Commercial and Business Law) of the Global Insights Law Journal (GILJ), an international peer-reviewed law journal dedicated to promoting high-quality legal scholarship and interdisciplinary legal research. In this capacity, he provides strategic editorial leadership in corporate and commercial law while ensuring rigorous peer review, editorial integrity, and international publication standards.
Professor Halliday is an active member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL), the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC). He has participated extensively in national and international conferences and continues to mentor emerging legal scholars and practitioners through research, teaching, editorial leadership, and professional service.
